Travel That Speaks Your Language

There is a certain kind of traveller who has already been everywhere once — and now wants to go deeper. Not just to see the Dolomites, but to cycle every pass. Not just to visit Bordeaux, but to learn to read a label, walk a vineyard at harvest, and sit across from a winemaker over a fourth glass as the sun goes down.

Specialty tours are designed for people whose passion leads the itinerary. We do not build these routes around logistics or landmarks. We build them around what you actually love — and we find the expert who loves it as much as you do to be your guide.

Our 20 specialty categories span every continent and every obsession: golf pilgrimages to St Andrews and Pebble Beach; cycling expeditions that pedal Alpe d'Huez and the Stelvio Pass; rail journeys across the Trans-Siberian and along the Bernina Express; night-sky astronomy camps in the Atacama; and three-country culinary immersions through Emilia-Romagna, Lyon, and Kyoto.

Each tour is led by a subject-matter expert — not a generalist guide with a script, but a specialist who has published on the topic, competed at the highest level, or spent decades in the field. They do not just show you the thing. They show you how to see it.

The right guide does not just open doors. They open your eyes to things you would have walked straight past.

Pro Tips

Insider Knowledge Before You Go

Hard-won wisdom from our travel experts — things the guidebooks don't always tell you.

🎯

Tell Us Your Level Before Booking

Whether it is your handicap index, PADI certification level, or camera gear list — we match every traveller to the right group dynamic and guide expertise. Overstating experience leads to frustration; we would rather design a tour around where you actually are.

📦

Pack for the Activity, Not the Destination

Cycling requires cycling shoes. Photography tours need filter kits. Golf pilgrimages require soft spikes and specific collar dress codes at private clubs. We send a curated kit list 6 weeks before departure for every specialty category.

👥

Group Size Is Deliberate

We cap specialty tours at 8–14 guests. Smaller groups mean more access — private club visits, behind-the-scenes kitchen tours, dawn birding positions that a 30-person bus cannot reach. This is why you are here.

📋

Permits and Access Need Lead Time

Golf tee times at St Andrews sell out 12 months ahead. Gorilla permits in Bwindi need 6–9 months. Certain private wine estates are access-by-invitation only. Book specialty tours at least 6 months in advance.

🛡️

Equipment Insurance Is Separate

Golf clubs worth ₹2L+, carbon road bikes, and professional camera systems are rarely covered by standard travel policies. We recommend specialist equipment riders from World Nomads or Photoguard.

🗣️

Language of Passion Is Universal

Our specialist guides are selected as much for their enthusiasm as their expertise. The best astronomy tour we ever ran had a guide who had just published a paper on stellar formation. He could not stop pointing at things. That is what we look for.

Process

How We Plan Your Journey

From first conversation to final boarding pass — a seamless process designed around you.

01

Choose Your Interest

Browse by category — golf, cycling, photography, birding, astronomy, culinary, wine, rail, surfing, or ski. Each page has a detailed day-by-day breakdown so you know exactly what you are signing up for.

02

Skill & Experience Assessment

We ask for your handicap, PADI level, cycling weekly mileage, or photography kit — depending on the tour. Matching guests by experience level produces better group dynamics and better experiences.

03

Reserve Your Spot (with Deposit)

Popular specialty tours fill 6–12 months ahead. A 30% deposit secures your spot while we confirm the specialist guide, private club access, and restricted permits.

04

Pre-Tour Briefing & Kit Guide

6 weeks before departure: full kit list, specialist guide biography, reserve-specific protocols, and a welcome video from your guide introducing the tour.

05

Depart as a Guest. Return as an Expert.

Specialty tours are transformative. Most guests rate their post-trip depth of knowledge as the single most memorable outcome — even above the sightings and the scenery.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior experience in the specialty to join?+

It depends on the tour. We rate each itinerary by experience level (beginner-friendly / intermediate / advanced / expert). A beginner culinary tour through Emilia-Romagna requires no cooking experience — just curiosity. An advanced cycling expedition expects you to climb 1,500m+ daily. We are always explicit about prerequisites.

Can I book a private specialty tour for my group?+

Yes — private departures are available for all 20 specialty tours with a minimum group of 4 guests. Private groups get flexible dates, customised route extensions, and dedicated equipment support. Contact us for a private quote.

What happens if I miss a session or cannot keep up on a cycling day?+

Our support vehicles follow all cycling and trekking tours. If you need to skip a climb or cut a day short, that is completely normal and accommodated. No guest is ever left behind — the van is always there.

Are international flights included?+

International airfares to/from the starting city are not included unless explicitly stated (as in the Golf Grand Slam internal transatlantic segment). We provide fare estimates and can book flights on your behalf — just ask.

How do specialty guides differ from regular tour guides?+

Our specialist guides are subject-matter experts first and guides second. They may be published ornithologists, former pro cyclists, working winemakers, or professional photographers. They are selected for depth of knowledge and genuine passion — not for translation skills or monument memorisation.

What is the minimum group size for a specialty tour to depart?+

Most specialty tours require a minimum of 6 confirmed guests to depart as scheduled. If a departure falls below minimum, we offer a rescheduled departure, a credit toward a private booking, or a full refund — you choose.

Can specialty tours be combined back-to-back?+

Yes — some guests combine a photography tour with a wildlife safari, or a culinary tour with a wine immersion. We will design a seamless multi-week itinerary across two specialty categories. Contact us to explore combinations.

What Our Travellers Say

Real experiences from real people. 4.8/5 from 570+ verified ratings.

★★★★★

Playing St Andrews Old Course with a 50-year caddy who has walked that fairway 8,000 times is the difference between visiting a cathedral and understanding why it was built. The Golf Grand Slam was the best three weeks of my life.

I have done two professional photography workshops. The Patagonia Photography Expedition with Tern Voyages was better than both. Our guide had led three National Geographic expeditions. I came back with portfolio shots I am actually proud of.

The Trans-Siberian in January is brutal. The astronomy guide made it worth every frozen minute. Lake Baikal at minus 30, a billion stars overhead, and a man who could name every constellation in three languages explaining stellar formation. Incomparable.

The Burgundy wine harvest was pure immersion. Three days picking grapes at 6am, afternoons in the chai learning to taste, evenings with the winemaker. I came back a completely different person about wine. Ten out of ten.
