Why Safari with Tern Voyages

A wildlife encounter cannot be scripted. It cannot be guaranteed. But it can be maximised — through the right zone, the right season, the right guide, and the right instinct developed over thousands of hours in the field. That is what our naturalists bring to every game drive.

We have been planning Indian and international safaris since 2015, and in that time we have learnt one non-negotiable truth: the quality of the experience lives entirely in the quality of the naturalist. We partner only with certified, locally licensed guides who know specific reserves intimately — the individual tigers, the waterholes lions favour, the exact rocky outcrop where the leopard family sleeps.

Conservation is not a marketing slogan for us. A percentage of every safari booking is channelled to habitat restoration, anti-poaching support, and community-led conservation initiatives in the exact reserves you visit. When you go on safari with Tern Voyages, the ecosystem you come to see gets something back.

Our safari portfolio spans six countries and three continents — from one-horned rhinos in Kaziranga to gorilla trekking in Uganda, from elephant herds in Amboseli to orangutans in Borneo. If wildlife lives there, we can take you there — responsibly.

The tiger came to the edge of the clearing and looked directly at our jeep for forty-five seconds. Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. Nobody wanted it to end.

Pro Tips

Insider Knowledge Before You Go

Hard-won wisdom from our travel experts — things the guidebooks don't always tell you.

🌿

Wear Muted, Natural Colours

Khaki, olive, brown, and grey are standard for game drives. Avoid white (alerts animals), blue, and bright colours that reduce sightings.

🔇

Silence Is Your Best Tool

The best wildlife encounters happen in silence. Keep voices low, phone notifications off, and avoid sudden movements. Animals habituated to vehicles are not habituated to noise.

🌅

Dawn and Dusk Are Prime Time

Most predators are most active in the first two hours after sunrise and the hour before sunset. Always prioritise these game drive slots over midday outings.

🦟

Anti-Malarial Precautions

For East and Southern Africa, consult your doctor about appropriate anti-malarials 6–8 weeks before departure. DEET-based repellent, long sleeves at dusk, and bed nets are essential.

📷

Camera Settings Before You Enter

Set your camera to burst mode, auto-ISO with a minimum 1/500s shutter speed before the gate. Animals do not wait for you to adjust settings. Keep the lens cap in your pocket.

🪪

Carry All Health Documentation

Yellow fever vaccination certificates are mandatory for many East African countries if travelling from India. Ensure your Yellow Card is up to date and keep a digital copy accessible.

Process

How We Plan Your Journey

From first conversation to final boarding pass — a seamless process designed around you.

01

Wildlife Wishlist

Tell us the species or ecosystems on your list — tigers, gorillas, migration crossings, marine life. We build the route around what you actually want to see.

02

Season & Zone Selection

Wildlife density varies dramatically by season, zone, and year. We analyse current field data and naturalist reports to identify the optimal timing for your trip.

03

Permit & Lodge Booking

Safari permits in top reserves sell out months in advance. We secure zones, permits, and accommodation simultaneously — no last-minute surprises.

04

Naturalist Briefing

Before your first game drive, your naturalist walks you through animal behaviour, photography ethics, and reserve-specific protocols. Knowledge transforms a sighting into an understanding.

05

Return & Report

Post-trip, we document your sightings for our naturalist records. Your trip contributes to citizen science data that supports conservation in the reserves you visited.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best park in India for seeing a tiger?+

Ranthambore and Bandhavgarh offer the highest success rates for tiger sightings, especially Oct–March. Ranthambore has more relaxed tigers; Bandhavgarh has the highest density. We recommend 2 nights minimum at each for serious tiger seekers.

When exactly is the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara?+

The dramatic Mara River crossings typically occur July–October, with August being the most intense month. However, migration is dictated by rain and grass growth. We monitor real-time field reports and time your trip to the crossing, not just the month.

Is safari appropriate for children?+

Many India safaris allow children aged 5+. African reserves vary — some permit children 12+, others 6+. We always clarify age policies per reserve before booking. Children who are quiet and observant have exceptional safari experiences.

What vaccinations do I need beyond yellow fever?+

For East Africa, recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, and rabies (if extended stays). For India-only itineraries, standard traveller vaccinations apply. Always consult a travel medicine clinic 6–8 weeks before departure.

How close do jeeps get to animals?+

Ethical reserve guidelines set minimum distances — typically 5–30 m from large predators. Our guides always respect these boundaries. Getting too close stresses animals and disrupts natural behaviour. The best sightings are patient, respectful ones.

What should I pack for an African safari?+

Neutral colours, lightweight long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hat, high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, binoculars (8x42 recommended), and a camera with a 400mm+ lens for wildlife. We send a full kit list on booking.

Are solo travellers welcome on safari packages?+

Absolutely. Group departures (6–12 guests per vehicle) are perfect for solo travellers and often lead to lifelong friendships formed in the field. Single-supplement rates apply for private accommodation; shared tent options are available.

What Our Travellers Say

Real experiences from real people. 4.8/5 from 570+ verified ratings.

★★★★★

The tigress came out of the grass and walked directly towards our jeep. She looked at each of us, turned, and disappeared into the forest. Our naturalist had 22 years in Ranthambore. Without him, we would have been staring at empty scrub.

★★★★★

The Mara River crossing happened on our third day. Seven hundred wildebeest entered the water simultaneously. Crocodiles moving from every direction. You cannot prepare yourself for what that sounds like.

★★★★★

The Galápagos package was unlike anything in our 30 years of travel. Sea lions who genuinely do not care that you are there. Marine iguanas emerging from the sea ten feet from your feet. It is the most extraordinary wildlife on earth.

★★★★★

Sitting in a wooden boat on the Kinabatangan River at dawn watching an orangutan and her infant cross the canopy twenty feet above us — conservation travel does not get any better or more meaningful than this.
